News Release
Police Activity in SW McMinnville on January 7th - 01/08/22

On 01/07/22 at approximately 1530 hours, the McMinnville Police Department received a report of a drug violation involving a 45-year-old male from McMinnville.  Family members reported that the male was suspected to be in possession of, and under the influence of, controlled substances and recently experiencing significant mental health issued related to his drug use. He was also reported to have recently expressed suicidal ideations and made threats of harm towards family members.

Over the course of the investigation, officers were able to determine that the male was the suspect in a burglary of a McMinnville residence that had just occurred, where multiple firearms were stolen.

Further investigation indicated that the male was last known to be located at a residence of a family member in the SW area of McMinnville and was likely armed with one or more of the stolen firearms. Officers responded to the area and were able to confirm that he was the only occupant in the residence.

Officers established probable cause for the arrest of the male Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Theft I and Burglary I. Due to the arrest situation and out of concern for his threats of self-harm and the safety of other family members, officers attempted to establish communication with the male by phone and verbally from outside the residence.

Following several unsuccessful attempts to establish communication with the male, a single gunshot was heard from inside the residence.

Neighbors in the area were asked to shelter in place via Everbridge.

Additional law enforcement resources were established and with the assistance of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Negotiation Team (TNT) and other law enforcement personnel, officers were able to make entry into the residence.  Upon entry officers discovered that the male was deceased inside the residence from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  The suspects name is being withheld pending complete notification of the family.

The McMinnville Police Department would like to thank Washington County Sherriff’s office, The Yamhill County Sheriffs’ Office, and the Yamhill County Emergency Management Office for their assistance.
