Update: Fisherman who died after falling overboard in Willamette River is identified (Photo) - 03/08/21

UPDATE: The adult male who died Saturday evening after falling into the Willamette River is identified as Oscar De Wayne Mayes, 56, of Portland. Next of kin notifications have been made.

According to witnesses, Mayes lost his balance and fell into the water. He was not wearing a life jacket.

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office River Patrol Unit urges people recreating around the water to wear a life jacket.

ORIGINAL RELEASE: On Saturday, March 6, 2021, at approximately 6:19 p.m., the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a man and a dog who had fallen overboard from a small fishing boat in the Swan Island Lagoon, an inlet of the Willamette River. Marine deputies responded, as did Portland Fire & Rescue, who dispatched several land units and a rescue boat to aid in the search. At approximately 6:45 p.m., the missing man was located. He was pronounced deceased on scene.

The dog was located on shore and taken to an animal hospital for evaluation.

The man's identity is being withheld until next of kin notifications are made. ###
