News Release
Deputies Focused On Occupant Safety During February Mission - 02/06/19

Now through February 17th, deputies from the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) will be spending additional time on local roadways enforcing state laws related to seatbelt use, mobile device use and distracted driving.  These patrols are funded through a grant from the Oregon State Sheriffs' Association.

MCSO, along with other Sheriff's Offices from around the state, will be focused on educating drivers and passengers on proper safety belt use, including the correct installation of child safety seat systems.

Drivers and passengers who are cited for failing to use their safety belt, or improper use of their safety belt, face fines of $120 in Multnomah County.  Drivers who are cited for "Operating A Motor Vehicle While Using A Mobile Electronic Device" face fines between $270 for the first offense and fines up to $3,500 and 6 months in jail for the third offense within a 10-year period.

While Oregon continues to rank in the top 10 in the nation for seatbelt use with an average useage rate of 96%, MCSO deputies still respond to dozens of crashes each year that result in injury or fatality as a result of improper seat belt use.

If drivers have questions about the proper installation of a child safety seat system, or any other seat belt use questions, they should contact their local police department or sheriff's office.
