Marion County Jury Convicts Man In Case Involving Abuse Of Child And Family Dog - 08/14/26

Marion County Jury convicts Man in Case Involving Abuse of Child and Family Dog

 

Salem, OR – August 14, 2026 – Yesterday, Marion County Circuit Court Judge Jennifer Gardiner sentenced Bryon Gilmore (age 37) to 56 months in the Department of Corrections. A Marion County jury found Gilmore guilty of two counts of Criminal Mistreatment in the First Degree, and one count Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Animal Abuse in the Second Degree, and Menacing.  

 

The conviction stems from a case referred to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office in January of 2024. The victim, a 13-year-old child, suffered physical and emotional abuse at the hands of the father, the defendant, beginning around age seven. The final incident that prompted the victim to disclose all events occurred on January 5, 2024 when the defendant directed his anger from the family dog towards the child.

 

After disclosing the incident to the mother, the victim then shared several other events that occurred while at the defendant’s house, including being hit without warning and being subjected to deliberate cruelty.

 

When law enforcement became involved, Gilmore told the victim not to tell anyone – including a judge – about these incidents.

 

Before sentencing Gilmore to 56 months Judge Gardiner said “…the fact that the adult in [the child’s] world, charged with keeping them safe, was the one who perpetrated the nightmare, is certainly an aggravating factor...”

 

 

“Children in our community deserve to be safe in their own homes and with their own parents,” said District Attorney-elect Brendan Murphy. “This victim suffered at the hands of someone who should’ve provided protection. Their bravery and courage in coming forward were critical in the resolution of this case.”

 

This case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Katharine Semple. The DA’s office wishes to thank the partnership of the Marion County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Unit and the delicate work of the Liberty House.

 

No further information will be released due to the involvement of a juvenile victim.
