Vacant House Fire in Longview Displaces Transients. (Photo) - 01/10/19

At 0833 AM Longview Fire and Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue were dispatched to a reported house fire at 274 21st Ave. within the City of Longview. While enroute Longview Policed arrived on scene and described the building as 50% involved in fire and possibly occupied by transients.

When fire crews arrived from Longview Fire there was fire shooting from the two front windows and out of a side window, with fire lapping up the cedar shake siding towards the second floor of the small 1 ½ story home. The home was partially “Boarded Up” to keep vagrants out.

Firefighters made a rapid exterior attack and immediately transitioned to an interior attack with a focus on searching the building for possible occupants. Crews were able to search the first and second floors and determined the house unoccupied.

The fire was declared under control at 0900 hrs and Cowlitz PUD was called to disconnect any potential power to the building. According to neighbors the building has been vacant for several years and is known as a place transients frequent.

There were no injuries reported to firefighters or civilians. The building suffered significant damage and is considered a total loss. Cowlitz County Assessor’s Office show the most recent structural value listed at $10,510.00. There is also a detached garage behind the home that was not damaged.

Fire Industry Restoration Experts (FIRE) were called to perform board-up services to all windows and doors in an attempt to secure the building from further unauthorized occupancy. The fire is currently under investigation for origin and cause.
