Arson Suspected in Vacant House Fire - 02/12/18

Longview, WA -- Firefighters were dispatched to the scene of a structure fire at 2651 Baltimore Street in Longview around 1:15 AM early Saturday morning. During the response, dispatch advised that they were receiving multiple 911 calls about a large fire in a two story home.

First arriving engines found flames extending from the first floor to the roof. Firefighters attempted entry to search for victims and to control the fire but were unable due to a four foot tall debris and garbage pile that filled the entire first floor of the home. The pile was so dense that firefighters could not force inward opening doors to open.

At 1:41 AM, fire department personnel were ordered out of the structure due to the dangerous situation caused by the debris inside. Instead, they cut holes in the exterior walls of the house in order to prevent fire spread to a nearby home on 27th Avenue and to continue the search for possible victims inside.

An elderly couple were evacuated from their home due to fire and smoke danger during firefighting operations. They were uninjured and returned to their home once the fire was brought under control.

The fire was declared out at 3:23 AM. The latest tax bill valued the home at $114,430; it will likely be considered a total loss due to damage.

The home had no utilities connected and had been vacant for at least a year. Arson is suspected as a cause of the fire and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information regarding this fire is requested to contact the Longview Fire Department at 360-442-5503 or the Longview Police Department.

Responding agencies included Longview Fire, Cowlitz 2 Fire, Longview Police, AMR Paramedics, and Cowlitz PUD. The last units cleared the scene just before 7:00 AM on Saturday.
