LFD Receives OFDDA Innovative Safety Award For 2020 - 02/10/21
At last night’s Board meeting, the Lebanon Fire District was honored to receive the Oregon Fire District Directors Association (OFDDA) 2020 Innovative Safety Award.
Presented to Division Chief of Training Mark Fitzwater and Recruitment and Retention Lieutenant Russell Duerr, the award is given to Oregon fire districts that are “trailblazers who solve problems, remove obstacles, and lead others to success.” The award was presented by OFDDA Director Allen Forster, who also serves as a member of the LFD Board of Directors, and Genoa Ingram, the Executive Director of the OFDDA.
The award was presented in recognition of the unique partnership between the Lebanon Fire District and the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific-Northwest (COMP-Northwest). Affectionately called WLEA (“wheelie”), the Western University Lebanon Fire Emergency Alliance is a unique volunteer program in which medical students from the college volunteer as operational firefighters with the District. Prospective student volunteers must apply, interview, and then complete a rigorous Firefighter I Academy. The program benefits the students as they must volunteer in the community to graduate, the District by providing more operational firefighters on the fireground, and the Lebanon community as a whole.
To date, 24 WLEA volunteers have served the Lebanon Fire District. In 2020, WLEA volunteers contributed 270 hours of EMS and fire ride time, serving as a third person on an apparatus during calls. These hours made up almost a quarter of all volunteer ride time for the year.
In addition to the WLEA program, the Lebanon Fire District was also recognized for the Fire Corps program, a group of volunteers who provide emotional and practical support to fire victims and families. They also do car seat education, keep track of the life jackets at our kiosks, and since 2017 have installed 950 smoke alarms in homes in our community. The men and women of the Fire Corps are also trained to provide on scene rehab to firefighters during active fires and live fire drills.
“We give this award not only to those who are innovative, but who also can lead by example,” said Ms. Ingram as she presented the award.
Congratulations to our Training Division, and thank you to all our volunteers who make programs like this possible.
