11/09/25 - LCSO Case 25-5475 - Lane County Sheriff’s Deputy Assaulted, Strangled While Checking On Wellness Of Adult In Custody - 11/17/25

 
On November 9th at about 9:30 p.m., a Lane County Sheriff’s deputy assigned to the jail was conducting a routine security check of adults in custody (AICs). He noticed one AIC, Keviontae Damarion Burns, 22, of Eugene, was non-responsive. Concerned for his welfare, the deputy entered the cell to confirm he was breathing. Burns leapt up suddenly and choked, punched, and slammed the deputy’s head into a cell door, injuring the deputy.
 
Burns, who was in custody for multiple Eugene Municipal Court charges, was arrested on multiple charges related to the incident. The Lane County District Attorney’s Office filed on charges of Assault in the 2nd Degree, Strangulation, and Assault on a Public Safety Officer.
 
The deputy has since recovered and is back on duty.
