Lake Oswego School District Reschedules Kindergarten Counts Open House -01/16/24

Due to winter storm-related school closures, the Lake Oswego School District (LOSD) has rescheduled its annual Kindergarten Counts open house for Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2024.  The event provides prospective families with a unique opportunity to connect with school principals, teachers, and other families while gaining insights into the district's outstanding educational programs and services.

Kindergarten Counts, initially scheduled for January 17, will be hosted at all LOSD neighborhood elementary schools, including Forest Hills, Hallinan, Lake Grove, Oak Creek, River Grove at Uplands, and Westridge Elementary Schools, on Wednesday, January 24, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Parents and guardians of children entering kindergarten in the fall of 2024 will have the opportunity to explore LOSD's educational philosophy, curriculum, extracurricular programs, childcare services, and other transitional programs that nurture academic and social/emotional success.

"Our goal is to engage with incoming families early in the process, establishing meaningful, long-lasting relationships by addressing their inquiries during this warm and welcoming event,” said Frank Luzaich, Executive Director of Elementary Programs. “Kindergarten Counts is a significant evening for us, helping us plan for the upcoming kindergarten enrollment and allocate district resources efficiently. This event facilitates smooth transitions between preschool and kindergarten."

If the number of kindergarten registrations surpasses the available capacity at a school, a lottery will be conducted for age-eligible students. The deadline for lottery participation is Friday, Apr. 26, with the lottery scheduled for Wednesday, May 1, and notifications to be sent by Friday, May 3. Priority in the lottery system will be given to newly registered kindergarten students with older siblings at the same school. Students not selected in the lottery for a school over capacity will be redirected to another LOSD elementary school (an overflow school). Any new registrations received after April 26 exceeding a school's kindergarten capacity will also be directed to an overflow school. Transportation will be provided for overflow students.

The eagerly anticipated new River Grove building will welcome students and staff for the 2024-2025 school year. Meanwhile, the River Grove learning community has been temporarily based at the Uplands Elementary School site for the past two years.

Elementary Immersion Information Night will take place at Palisades World Language School in two sessions on Tuesday, Jan. 30: Spanish Immersion from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Mandarin Chinese from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Parents and guardians interested in learning more about the district's language immersion programs are encouraged to attend either or both sessions based on their interests. Applications for the immersion program will be accepted online starting on January 30. Families must register at their neighborhood schools before applying for the immersion program.

Middle and High School Information Nights are designed for incoming sixth and ninth graders rising to our middle and high schools in the 2024-2025 school year.

  • Lake Oswego High: February 13, 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
