Experiencing Oregon Arts: Lane County High School Students Tour Local Venues to Learn About Careers in the Arts - 09/14/18

On Tuesday, September 25th, from 9:00am to 12:30pm, Connected Lane County and Lane Arts Council will guide 50 students from seven area high schools on a tour of the Hult Center for the Performing Arts, Oregon Contemporary Theater, New Zone Gallery, and HiFi Music Hall.  Additional guest speakers will represent local visual, graphic and performing arts careers in Lane County.

After the tour, students will experience several short performances from Ballet Fantastique, the Eugene Poetry Slam, and local vocal performer Laura Wayte, with the opportunity to hear from the performers themselves in a facilitated discussion about arts careers post-performance.

The tour was made possible by additional support from the Springfield Chamber of Commerce, Lane Community College, the Arts and Business Alliance of Eugene, the Eugene Symphony, and the Materials Exchange Center for the Community Arts (MECCA).

“Our community is made stronger by the variety of professional artists and arts organizations that call Lane County home. Connecting students with professionals in our community provides valuable career insight and empowers students' creative futures. This event feeds the future creative leaders of our community,” said Eric Braman Arts Education Program Coordinator at Lane Arts Council.

Both Lane Arts Council and Connected Lane County work with Lane County schools to help students understand how art intersects with other disciplines such as technology, manufacturing, and other STEM fields. Lane Arts Council focuses on connecting professional artists and students for high-quality, meaningful arts education experiences, such as their Product of Eugene Arts Apprenticeship Program, open to middle and high school students with interest in product design. Working with professional artists is at the core of all of their arts education programs.

Connected Lane County collaborates with a variety of community partners to orchestrate opportunities for high school students to learn more about careers in Lane County as part of the Elevate Lane County program.  This tour is the first of three “Experience Oregon” tours this fall, including Experience Oregon Manufacturing in celebration of National Manufacturing Day on October 5th, and Experience Oregon Tech in partnership with the Technology Association of Oregon on October 18th.
