Kelso High School senior, Jack (JJ) Robarge, has advanced to be a semifinalist in the 2023 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Starting from a pool of over 5,000 candidates nation-wide, Robarge was one of 77 from the state of Washington, and one of only seven from SW Washington. He is now one of 628 national semifinalists selected from the larger pool of candidates, one of eight semifinalists from Washington, and the only semifinalist from Cowlitz County.
“JJ is an extraordinary student who continuously demonstrates Kelso High School’s core values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, and Kindness, and reaches academic achievement in the face of hardship. He continues to amaze me with his work ethic and drive,” said Megan Elam, Kelso High School counselor. “JJ takes on challenges and is an exceptional student leader.”
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of their accomplishments in many areas—academic and artistic success, accomplishment in career and technical fields, leadership, strong character and involvement in school and the community.
“When we looked at nominating a student from Kelso, academics, involvement, and resilience in the face of obstacles were the key criteria that JJ easily demonstrated,” said Kali Dalton, Kelso High School counselor. Robarge is highly involved in school, maintains a 4.0 GPA, and has overcome medical obstacles that could have derailed his success. “We are so excited to have him at the semi-finalist level and are very proud of him!”
The Commission on U.S. Presidential Scholars, 32 eminent citizens appointed by the President, will select the seniors who will be named as the 2023 U.S. Presidential Scholars. The Commission's choices will be announced in May and the Presidential Scholars Class of 2023 will be recognized in late June with an online National Recognition Program.
