Arrest Following Vehicle Elude (Photo) - 03/25/20

Case # 20-00971

On March 25, 2020, before 9:00 a.m., a sergeant with the traffic safety unit attempted to stop a white, 2005 Mercedes near the intersection of River Road North and Dearborn Ave NE, for speeding. The driver, later identified as Eric Phillips, rapidly accelerated south on River Road, attempting to elude the motorcycle officer. Mr. Phillips quickly passed 70 mph, and the officer terminated the pursuit and lost sight of the car. Seconds later, Keizer Police dispatch advised that a vehicle had crashed into a building in the 3300 block of River Road North.

Arriving officers determined the crash involved the car that had been operated by Mr. Phillips. Investigation showed Mr. Phillips lost control and crashed into the cement barriers in front of a business at that location. When the collision with the barriers occurred, at least two individuals were standing on the other side of them, directly in the path of the Mercedes. Those individuals were not injured.

Immediately following the crash, Mr. Phillips fled the scene on foot. A Salem Police K9 unit responded, and Mr. Phillips was located, hiding in bushes in the 700 block of Plymouth Drive NE. He surrendered to the officers and was arrested without incident. No one was seriously injured, though a 24-year-old female passenger in Mr. Phillips’ car was slightly hurt, requiring no treatment. Mr. Phillips was taken to the Marion County jail for the listed charges.
