On Saturday, November 4, Jesuit High School will host the Jesuit Teach In for Social Justice, focusing on immigration and racial justice. The event will feature keynote speakers from the Portland metropolitan area and a live-streamed speaker from the national Teach-In that will be occurring the same weekend in Washington, D.C. The Jesuit Teach In will take place from 1 pm to 5 pm in Jesuit's Gedrose Student Center. "Students who cannot attend the national conference decided to host one at Jesuit High School for the larger community to learn about these important issues," said Scott Powers, Christian Service Director at Jesuit. Student leaders Josie Donlon, Anna Rask, Archita Harathi, Clare Devine and Mandy Mitchell are taking the lead on putting on the Teach In. "Both the Jesuit Teach-In for Justice and the national Teach In are wonderful opportunities for our students to engage in real world civic action," said Paul Hogan, Principal of Jesuit High School. "Students who have studied about immigration in the classroom and have done service with migrants are able to speak passionately with members of Congress about why humane immigration reform is needed. Our students both here in Portland and traveling to DC are living the Jesuit mission to practice a 'faith that promotes justice'." Following the Teach In, participants will be encouraged to lobby elected officials to pass legislation that to reform our immigration system and our criminal justice and system. Registration for the Jesuit Teach-In is open to the public and is available online: www.jesuitportland.org/our-community/jesuit-teach-in-for-justice/jesuit-teach-in-for-justice-registration The Jesuit Teach In is occurring in conjunction with the Ignatian Teach In in Washington, D.C., an annual gathering that provides opportunities for attendees to learn, reflect, pray, network, and advocate in the context of the Catholic faith tradition. A significant portion of attendees are young people, ages 16-22, representing Jesuit and other Catholic institutions from across the U.S., as well as Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and El Salvador. The 2017 Teach-In theme, "Rowing into the Deep," invites participants to "to think more deeply about issues of immigration reform and criminal justice reform." The program is sponsored by the Ignatian Solidarity Network. ### About Jesuit High School: Founded in 1956 by the Society of Jesus, Jesuit High School is Oregon's only secondary school in the Ignatian tradition of excellence in education.
