Law Enforcement Activity Near Madras Schools

This morning, at approximately 7:30 a.m., law enforcement received reports of a male walking in the Madras area who was possibly carrying a firearm near local schools.

Out of an abundance of caution, local schools were placed in a secure status while deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from the Oregon State Police responded to investigate.

We want to be very clear: There has been NO shooting at any school, and there are no reports of shots being fired.

Law enforcement has contacted an individual matching the reported description and continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the initial reports, including searching the area for a possible firearm.

We understand that situations involving our schools create significant concern for parents and our community. We ask everyone to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information on social media, and allow law enforcement and school officials to do their jobs.

The safety of our students, school staff, and community remains our highest priority.

We will provide additional information as it becomes available.
