Multi-Agency Technical Rescue Brings Injured Hiker To Safety Near Tom Dick And Harry Mountain - 09/16/26

GOVERNMENT CAMP, Ore. — Hoodland Fire District personnel joined multiple local and state agencies Tuesday in a technical rescue involving an injured hiker near Tom Dick and Harry Mountain.

Hoodland Fire and Clackamas Fire were initially dispatched for a technical rescue involving an injured hiker in steep terrain near the Mt. Hood Skibowl ski area. The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office was also notified due to the potential need for a Search and Rescue response.

 

Clackamas County Sheriff's Office personnel, Hoodland Fire's first-arriving engine, and an American Medical Response ambulance were on scene and beginning the response when a Hoodland Fire chief officer arrived and established incident command. Hoodland Fire worked with Sheriff's Office personnel and a Clackamas Fire Battalion Chief to confirm the patient's location, evaluate rescue options, and determine the best access for personnel and equipment.

 

Hoodland Fire and Clackamas Fire crews used UTVs and the Mt. Hood Skibowl access road to reach the Upper Bowl area before continuing on foot along the ridge to the patient's location.

Because of the patient's location and difficult terrain, aviation resources were requested to assist with the rescue. Life Flight Network responded and was available to transport the patient from the Skibowl area. An Oregon National Guard helicopter from Salem also responded with hoist capabilities.

 

The National Guard helicopter lowered a paramedic to the patient's location, where patient care was provided in coordination with Hoodland Fire and Clackamas Fire personnel. After evaluating the patient and available evacuation options, paramedics at the patient's location determined that a direct helicopter hoist and transport provided the most appropriate evacuation rather than carrying the patient out and transferring to Life Flight.

The patient was packaged and hoisted aboard the National Guard helicopter with two paramedics and transported directly to a Portland-area hospital for further treatment.

 

Portland Mountain Rescue and Search and Rescue personnel were also dispatched through the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office and staged nearby to provide additional rescue personnel if needed.

 

This rescue brought together personnel and resources from Hoodland Fire District, Clackamas Fire District, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, American Medical Response, Life Flight Network, the Oregon National Guard, Portland Mountain Rescue, Search and Rescue personnel, and Mt. Hood Skibowl.

 

Hoodland Fire District appreciates the cooperation and professionalism of everyone involved in safely reaching, treating, and evacuating the patient from this challenging location.
