Hoodland Fire District Responded To A Vehicle Over An Embankment (Photo) - 07/14/23
Government Camp, Ore. — Shortly after 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday July 12, Hoodland Fire District responded to a technical rescue to a vehicle that went over a guardrail and down a steep embankment on Highway 26 near mile post 50. Hoodland firefighters were assisted by Clackamas Fire District and rescued two people who were in the pickup truck. One occupant was able to get out of the vehicle on their own and the other was entrapped inside the vehicle. Firefighters sent personnel over the embankment using rope systems and were able to get both people up to the highway in just under 5 hours. Highway 26 was closed during that time and used to land two separate Lifeflight helicopters.
Both victims sustained significant injuries and appeared to be disoriented, but they were conscious and talking when crews as they arrived at the vehicle, crews were able to stabilize both patients. The entrapped patient was extricated from the vehicle using hydraulic tools and both patients were placed in litters and lifted by rope systems back to the highway.
Once rescued, both victims were flown to the hospital for evaluation. There’s no word on their current condition. In addition to Clackamas Fire District and Lifeflight, Hoodland firefighters were assisted by American Medical Response, Oregon State Police, and Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office.
Fire officials do not know what led to the vehicle leaving the highway.
