Thanks to the efforts of a Hockinson High School junior, octoball--or gaga ball--has arrived at Hockinson Middle School.

"As a middle schooler I wanted another option besides basketball, tetherball and foursquare," said Kevin Williams. "When I learned how to play octoball at youth group, I knew it would be a great game for students in middle school."

Octoball is similar to dodgeball but is played in a small fenced-in court. Players are eliminated when struck with a ball at or below the knee.

Kevin did the planning, got approvals and raised money for materials for the project, which is part of his effort to earn the Eagle Scout rank in Boy Scouts. He then supervised the building process as Troop 475 and his family supplied the labor. The pit recently opened for play.

"The octoball pit was a huge hit," said Middle School Principal Brian Lehner. "The excitement it created at lunch was awesome, and the kids jumped right in."
