Hillsboro Police Officer Involved Shooting (Updated 8-26-22) (Photo) -08/26/22

On 08/26/22 Hillsboro Police received an investigative update on the violent unprovoked attack which resulted in an officer involved shooting.

The involved officer is identified as Lieutenant Neil Potter, a 23-year veteran of the Hillsboro Police Department. Potter is currently assigned to the patrol division as a watch commander.

During the assault, Potter was knocked to the ground and suffered broken facial bones and a concussion. Once on the ground, the subject continued to assault Potter and made efforts to take Potter’s handgun.

As a result, we can release the following information:

We are releasing images received today, provided by the Washington County Major Crimes Team in response to public inquiry about this event.

The attached video from a nearby business depicts the initial attack against Lt. Potter, Potter’s attempt to disengage, and the subjects continued attack of the officer.

Jose Juan Aguilar-Mandujano remains hospitalized. 

Lieutenant Potter continues to recover from injuries resulting from this incident.

No further release of information as this continues to be an active ongoing investigation.

Hillsboro Police is releasing and confirming the identity of the individual who attacked a Hillsboro Police Officer and was shot. Jose Juan Aguilar-Mandujano, 20, of Hillsboro. 

Mr. Aguilar-Mandujano remains in critical condition at Legacy Emmanuel hospital. 

Washington County Major Crimes Team (MCT) is the lead investigative Unit and are still actively investigating the incident. 

No further release of information will be made at this time.

SE Washington St. has been fully reopened between SE 10th Ave and SE 12th Ave.

Tri-Met MAX has been advised normal service may resume.

Hillsboro Police Respond to Officer-Involved Shooting


The max line is closed near SE10th Ave. and SE Washington St.  for the investigation of a critical incident near the north end of the Hillsboro Police Department.  According to civilian witnesses, at 1:00 pm on August 19, a Hillsboro Officer was attacked near his patrol vehicle and an Officer Involved shooting occurred. Washington County’s Major Crime Team is investigating this incident.

SE Washington St. will remain closed for several hours between SE 10th Ave. and SE 12th Ave. while the investigation is being conducted. MAX Light rail service is interrupted west of SE 12th St. 

There is NO active threat to the public and NO outstanding suspects related to this incident.

The Washington County Major Crimes Team was called to the scene to investigate the incident. The team is made up of detectives from law enforcement agencies throughout the county and is coordinated by the Washington County District Attorney's Office. The team responds to major crimes that occur in Washington County.
