Murder charges added to the suspect in the downtown Hillsboro fire as the result of a body being found (Photo) - 02/15/22

Early in the week of February 9, 2022, a body was recovered in the debris of the Weil Arcade fire in Downtown Hillsboro. The remains were recently identified as 40-year old Knapp, Ronald William. As a result of the death of Mr. Knapp, these findings were presented to the Washington District Attorney’s Office for review of additional charges. Today, after being arraigned on a grand jury indictment, additional charges of Murder-II and Arson-I were added to 34-year old Leon, Roel who is currently in custody of the Washington County Jail.

We thank the Washington County District Attorney’s Office for their continued work in this case, along with Hillsboro Fire and Rescue, ATF, our community, and the local businesses for their collaborative effort in this case.

Update post from February 9, 2022

As part of the ongoing investigation of the Weil Arcade fire on Main Street in Downtown Hillsboro being conducted by the Hillsboro Police Department, the Hillsboro Fire & Rescue, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) investigators discovered the remains of a deceased male inside the location of the fire earlier this week.

The man's death was determined to be caused by smoke inhalation. Hillsboro Police detectives are working to identify the victim, who is not believed to be associated with the Weil Arcade businesses or location. Hillsboro Fire and Rescue concluded its investigation and determined the fire was intentionally set.

The discovery of the victim was delayed due to safety concerns with the building. We do not believe there are anymore victims in the debris. Information from the discovery of the deceased person will be forwarded to the Washington County District Attorney’s Office for review and charging decisions.

This investigation was a collaborative effort by multiple departments and agencies. We appreciate the support of our partners, business community, and community members.
