News Release
Hillsboro Police to conduct extra distracted driving patrols. - 07/08/19

Through July 31, Hillsboro Police officers are conducting extra patrols to detect distracted drivers. In Oregon, a distracted driving crash happens every 2.5 hours. Distracted drivers pose a deadly risk to everyone on the road.

Oregon law prohibits the use of any mobile electronic device by drivers, unless hands-free. Drivers younger than 18 cannot use any mobile electronic device. It’s a primary offense, meaning police can stop a driver just for violating this law carrying a penalty of a fine of $265 for the first conviction.

Distracted driving goes beyond cell phones; it includes eating, grooming, reading, talking, or any activity that takes your attention off the road.

The extra patrols are grant-funded by Oregon Impact. For more information, visit www.oregonimpact.org.
