Gresham, Ore. - On Tuesday, Jan. 4, at 4:40 p.m., the Gresham Police Department (GPD) received a report of an armed robbery at the Key Bank, located in the 2600 block of Southeast Burnside Rd. Dispatchers relayed the suspect description as an adult white male wearing a hooded sweatshirt, and described the getaway car as a white Mercedes sport utility vehicle (SUV).
Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputies located the SUV in Troutdale shortly before 5 p.m. and initiated a traffic stop, but the suspect did not stop and a pursuit involving both agencies ensued. The suspect led law enforcement officers north on Southwest 257th Ave. to Northeast Marine Dr., and then returned to Gresham southbound on 223rd Ave. The suspect turned into a business park and ended up near NW Civic Dr.
While the suspect was driving, near NW Civic Dr., he opened the car door and fired several times at pursuing deputies. The suspect, and a female accomplice, exited the SUV and carjacked a driver at gunpoint, ordering the innocent motorist to drive. One MCSO deputy and one GPD officer fired their duty weapons at the suspect.
The innocent driver, carjacking victim, was rescued by officers and was not injured. Law enforcement officers took the female suspect into custody without further incident.
Lifesaving aid was provided to the suspect by law enforcement. Shortly after, medical personnel declared the suspect deceased.
No law enforcement officers were hurt in the event, and no one at the bank or on the roads reported injuries.
The East County Major Crime Team (MCT) was activated and is performing the investigation. MCT consists of members from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, Gresham Police Department, Port of Portland Police Department, Oregon State Police, and the District Attorney’s Office. The FBI is also assisting due to the bank robbery.
The MCSO deputy and GPD officer involved in the shooting have been placed on critical incident leave, which is standard protocol for both agencies in events such as this.
The suspect is believed to be linked to additional, recent bank robberies in the Portland-metro area. His identity will be released at a later date and after next-of-kin notifications.
No further information regarding the other bank robberies is being released at this time.

Anyone may have witnessed the bank robbery, shooting or car crashes are asked to contact the Major Crime Team by calling the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office detectives at 503-988-0560 and referring to Gresham Police report number 22-00446.
Detectives believe there may have been other victims involved in traffic crashes during this incident that have not yet been contacted by law enforcement.
The area near NW Civic Dr. will open around noon today.
Due to the ongoing, criminal investigation, no additional details will be released at this time.
