On Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at approximately 11:38 pm, the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety received a report from a neighbor of a physical disturbance at 1295 Willow Ln. Around five minutes later, while the dispatcher was still obtaining information from the complainant and officers were en route, another call came in advising of a male subject with multiple stab wounds outside a residence one block away. Officers responded to both locations and determined the victim sustained his injuries during the disturbance on Willow Ln. He was transported to Rogue Regional Medical Center by AMR Ambulance for treatment and observation of what is being described as non-life threatening injuries.
At 11;59 pm, officers detained two male subjects at the incident location, one of whom was identified as the suspect, Julian Smith. The other subject detained was later released. Detectives with the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety, Oregon State Police, and the Josephine County Sheriff's Office responded to assist.
In the course of the investigation, it was determined the victim and suspect were acquaintances at the time of the incident and had been drinking. There was an altercation inside the residence, during which Smith stabbed the victim more than 15 times with a fixed-blade knife. The victim was able to walk to a friend's residence nearby for help.
Based on the investigation, there is no indication of any risk or threats to the public. Smith was lodged at the Josephine County Jail on the listed charges. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to call GPDPS at 541-450-6260 reference case 21-10726.
