News Release
Structure Fire 1055 NE Hefley Street - 03/20/20

Quick action by student firefighter saves the day.

Kaci Carder, a student firefighter with Jacksonville Fire Department, was visiting a friend when she heard the telltale sound of a smoke alarm. Kaci quickly found the location of the sound, a house filling with smoke.

She furiously knocked and tried to make sure all was okay. After finding an open door, Kaci was able to quickly put her training to work rescuing two dogs. She also was able to see the fire was on the range top and quickly turned it off while exiting the home. Kaci and the dogs were uninjured.

In a bit of irony, the cause of the fire was most likely one of the dogs turning on the range while trying to get to a cake.

The Grants Pass Fire Prevention Bureau urges you to have a working smoke alarm. Working smoke alarms save lives!
