Girl Scouts to Talk About Civics Learning with U.S. Congressman Earl Blumenauer

Representative Blumenauer Leading on Proposed Civics Learning Legislation

PORTLAND, Ore. – Monday, November 25, 2019 – On Monday afternoon (2-2:30 p.m. PT), Congressman Earl Blumenauer (OR-03), will address local Girl Scouts from Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington, to commend them on their community service and civic engagement and inspire their continued leadership. Rep. Blumenauer will also announce his sponsorship of proposed civics learning legislation.

“I started my political career as a young person advocating to lower the voting age and I understand the importance of lifting up the next generation,” said U.S. Congressman Earl Blumenauer. “Girl Scouts helps girls develop the confidence and skills they need to step into important leadership roles. The girls I’m meeting this afternoon are creating positive social change in their communities and will undoubtedly grow into the leaders of tomorrow.”

“We welcome Congressman Blumenauer to Girl Scouts today to speak with girls about civic engagement and share his experience and knowledge about becoming engaged as young people,” says Paige Walker, Chief Operations Officer for Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington. “We’re looking forward to engaging questions from Girl Scouts and an inspiring afternoon with the Congressman.”

Civics Learning Legislation

Congressman Blumenauer will announce his co-sponsorship of the Civics Learning Act (H.R. 849).

“Girl Scouts supports the Civics Learning Act to strengthen civics education and provide students with valuable experiences, including from groups like Girl Scout councils, so they grow into informed, involved, and conscientious individuals,” says Maureen Kenney, Public Relations and Advocacy Manager for Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington.

Congressman Blumenauer is also expected to introduce his own proposed legislation that is complimentary to the Civics Learning Act, the USA Civics Act.
