Girl Scouts Reach For The Stars And Envision A STEM Future At Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum (Photo) - 10/23/19
PORTLAND, Ore. – October 23, 2019 – Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington are taking over the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum on the evening of October 26, 2019.
“The girls will enjoy a variety of astronomy activities from the new Space Science badges, now available for Girl Scouts of every grade level,” says Shannon Joseph, STEM Specialist for Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington. “While they’re having a great time, girls are also getting a chance to see a potential future for themselves in this exciting STEM field.”
Research shows women are still vastly under-represented in STEM fields and exposing girls to subjects such as Astronomy at a young age is vital to ignite their curiosity and close this gap. Girl Scouts, with the support of partnering organizations like Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum, provide opportunities for younger girls to jump into STEM to explore their interests and passions to help bridge the gender gap.
Girl Scouts can bring their family members and friends for a night filled with space science fun and learning. Activities will include a solar system walk, hands-on astronomy activities like a moon phase flipbook and 3-D constellations - as well as enjoy a space science movie. Girls will also meet GSOSW’s Astronomy Club members and can step outside to look through a telescope at the stars.
