Girl Scout Cookie Bosses Hone Business and Entrepreneurial Skills during Depot Days

PORTLAND, OR. -- February 9, 2018 -- Girl Scout Cookie depot days are some of the most impressive volunteer-driven operations in Oregon and Southwest Washington. More than 1000 volunteers and Girl Scouts throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington help move 1.7 million boxes of Girl Scout Cookies in just six days between February 7 and February 13.

While customers often remember the cookie sellers they see in front of area businesses like Fred Meyer, Safeway-Albertson's, and Wal-Mart, they may never know about the countless hours contributed in support of the girls by volunteers. Volunteers serve in a variety of important roles, including Booth Sales Coordinators, Cookie Inventory Managers, Cookie Rally Organizers, Incentive Organizers, Regional Volunteer Organizers and Warehouse Coordinators.

Girl Scouts that participate during Depot Days gain exposure to these operations and hone business and entrepreneurial skills including communication, customer service, logistics, math, and group management.

"Depot day is the day you really get to see what girls in our area are capable of," says volunteer Katje Johnson Jacobs. "The sheer volume of cookies is amazing, and you see it stacked on pallets--it's a lot. You look back at the empty warehouse at the end of the day and you feel really good about it. We really appreciate all of the volunteer help, because it's hard work."

Girl Scout Cookies are stored at warehouses located in Eugene, Medford, Pendleton, Salem, Tualatin, and Vancouver, as well as fairgrounds locations throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington.
