On July 2 the Gresham-Barlow School District Board of Directors appointed Mayra Gómez to the board to fill a vacancy. Gómez is currently the director of college and career readiness for the West Linn-Wilsonville School District. Prior to that she served as the federal programs supervisor for the Centennial School District. Prior to working in the Centennial School District, she served as an assistant principal at Reynolds High School. Before joining the administrative ranks, she taught high school social studies and English as a second language at Gresham High School. She also worked as an AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) coordinator. Gómez currently serves as the board co-chair for El Programa Hispano.
The vacancy on the board was created in June when Director Sharon Garner resigned from an at-large position.
“With her strong commitment to the community, the school board is pleased to appoint Mayra Gómez,” said Board Chair Kris Howatt. “We are excited to have her join the Gresham-Barlow team and to continue the work we began with Director Garner.”
Garner had three years left on her term. Gómez will serve in the position until June 30, 2019. In May of 2019, an election will be held for the remainder of the term, which will end June 30, 2021.
Four community members applied to serve on the board. The board made the appointment after an interview process.
