#FinleyReads: Finley Elementary School to Participate in One School, One Book (Photo) - 11/06/19

KENNEWICK, WA – During parent conferences next week, families of each Finley Elementary School student will go home with a copy of Because of Winn Dixie, a children’s novel by Kate DiCamillo.  This book distribution and subsequent community-wide read along is part of the One School, One Book program, which encourages parents to read aloud to their kids at home. Finley Elementary School is the only school in the region signed up for the program through the Read to Them® organization.

In addition to the English copies every family will receive, Spanish- and Russian-speaking families in the English Language Learner (ELL) program will also receive copies of the book translated into the language spoken at home.

Fifth grade teacher Athena Pelly has spearheaded this project at Finley Elementary. “We want to make this experience as pleasurable and easy for everyone,” says Ms. Pelly. “There is so much research behind the academic and social emotional impact on families reading aloud.”

The entire Finley Elementary School will read Because of Winn Dixie over the course of four weeks, beginning November 18.  The goal is to read one or two chapters each day. Videos of teachers, school staff, high school students, and other community members reading each chapter in both English and Spanish will also be available for families not comfortable or not able to read along at home. These videos will be posted to the school’s website and Finley Facebook page.  At school, students will engage with the book through trivia read by Principal Pam Kinne over morning announcements.  A showing of the movie rendition of Because of Winn Dixie is scheduled for the end of January.
