Music Matters in Finley School District (Photo) - 10/07/19

KENNEWICK, WA – Finley students had bright smiles to match their shiny, new band instruments paid for with support from the Music Matters Grant.  Finley’s music teacher, Debora Dohaniuk, received a grant just under $5,000 from the Washington Music Educators Association. The district is matching 10% of the grant money to expand and improve music education for students across Finley schools.

The Music Matters Grant is awarded to provide supplemental support to public school music programs in districts where music funding may be scarce.  Mrs. Dohaniuk applied for the grant last spring and received word of the award in September. With the new funds, Finley has already been able to purchase 23 new band instruments to be used by band students in 5th-12th grade, 18 new music stands at the middle school, and a classroom set of 30 headphones.

“It was like Christmas in my classroom,” Mrs. Dohaniuk says of her students receiving their new instruments.

The next items to come are updated band method books and music, and continuing support for music education in Finley schools. The Washington Music Educators will be presenting a check to Finley schools at a later date to be determined.  For more information, contact Finley PIO Molly Curtiss at tiss@esd123.org">mcurtiss@esd123.org or 509-544-5787.
