MEDIA ALERT - Finley Students Act Quickly On Purported Threat - 03/08/18

KENNEWICK, WA -- Thanks to the quick thinking and actions by local Finley high schoolers, school has remained in session and safe for Finley students. On the evening of Wednesday, March 7th a student from River View High School in Finley sent a threatening message via the social media application SnapChat. The student in question sent the message to his own, secondary SnapChat account (an alternative 'dummy account' he created). He proceeded to "tag" other RVHS students on the social media platform to view his post.

The original message indicated that the threat was to be carried out at an offsite location during the evening of Saturday, March 10th (the same time as the scheduled Finley school dance). RVHS students reported the threat to school administration at approximately 8:00 AM on Thursday, March 8. Finley school administration immediately contacted the Benton County Sheriff's Office, who arrived at the high school and performed an investigation to evaluate the validity of the threat according to protocol. Law enforcement determined no credible threat to students or staff on campus, and that school was safe to continue operating as scheduled.

After questioning by law enforcement, the suspected student in question was apprehended by Benton County Officers. The RVHS school dance originally scheduled for March 10 has been postponed until further notice.

Finley parents and students will be notified of any new developments via electronic announcements and letters from the school. Finley School District appreciates the quick thinking and responsible reporting by its students. Any student, parent, or community member is encouraged to report threats to school or district administration or to local law enforcement.
