Celebrate Dr. John McLoughlin's 235th Birthday on October 19 at the McLoughlin House - 10/08/19

Join the McLoughlin Memorial Association and the National Park Service in celebration of Dr. John McLoughlin’s 235th Birthday! Several special events will be happening on Saturday, October 19th, at the McLoughlin House Unit of Fort Vancouver National Historic Site in Oregon City, Oregon.

The grounds will open at 11 am, with the McLoughlin and Barclay Houses opening at noon. Summer’s End Promenade will begin at 11 am. This event features volunteers in historically-authentic costumes from the different eras of Fort Vancouver, illustrating how fashion followed changes in societal roles.

Visitors may learn more about the lives of those who lived and worked in the McLoughlin House with free, guided tours offered from noon to 4 pm, featuring historic vignettes with living history interpreters. Activities for children, including games, crafts, and other hands-on projects, will be available all afternoon as well.

“John McLoughlin’s birthday is a time to remember the significant role he, and his family, played in the history of the Pacific Northwest, including management of the colonial trading post of Fort Vancouver, support for American immigrants coming across the Oregon Trail, and the establishment and growth of Oregon City,” said Tracy Fortmann, Superintendent. “It is also a time to celebrate the McLoughlin Memorial Association for their foresighted preservation of his retirement home. The Association’s important work ultimately resulted in the preservation of this iconic home, in perpetuity, as part of Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.”
