“History Happy Hour” with Friends of Timberline on May 2 at Oregon Historical Society
Celebrating an unforgettable Northwest icon, the nonprofit Friends of Timberline (FOT) is bringing Timberline Lodge’s history and lore down to Portland for an after-hours museum event at Oregon Historical Society (OHS) in downtown Portland on Thursday May 2 from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
“History Happy Hour: Timberline Traditions” event tickets are $25 (online at Eventbrite at bit.ly/FOTMAY2) and the fundraiser includes a VIP look at OHS's popular exhibit "Barley, Barrels, Bottles and Brews: 200 Years of Oregon Beer.”
John Bishop, CEO of Pendleton Woolen Mills will offer brief remarks about the historical ties between Pendleton and Timberline. Timberline Lodge Curator Linny Adamson has arranged for a rare offsite exhibition of artifacts from the Lodge.
Proceeds from the event will support the volunteer-based non-profit which was established in 1975 with support from Dick Kohnstamm, the celebrated area operator of Timberline Lodge and Ski Area from 1955 until 1992. FOT supports preservation, conservation, and community outreach programs at the Lodge, which is owned by the US Forest Service and operated by special use permittee RLK and Company.
“We know that it takes time to make it all the way up to Timberline for an FOT event, especially if you’re busy with life or families or work in the city,” says Lynda O’Neill, FOT Board President. “We’re hoping to “bring the mountain down” to Portland, so everyone can appreciate the Lodge’s history and have a nostalgic and fun night out on First Thursday. We want people to know what we’re about to help us keep Timberline beautiful for all of us.”
Highlights include wine from King’s Raven Winery and beer from Mount Hood Brewing Company. There will also be drawings for door prizes, including a Ray Atkinson photo trio printed in limited edition for the Lodge’s 80th Anniversary and a Pendleton Timberline Blanket. Sponsors include Kuni BMW, Pendleton Woolen Mills, and Washington Trust Bank.
As an active but independent partner FOT plays an important role in protecting the historical integrity and preservation of the Lodge itself while also documenting history and the archiving of art, artifacts and furnishings. Volunteers for FOT periodically take on major fundraising to finance high impact project work around the Lodge including the Rachael Griffith Museum and the Barlow Room (1986), Barbara Fealy Landscaping (1990), Amphitheatre Restoration (2006), New Winter Entrance (2009), Light Up the Lodge (2010), Light Up the Art (2016), and Naturalistic Ponds Restoration (anticipated by 2019 or 2020).
Held in downtown Portland at the Oregon Historical Society, 1200 Park Avenue, Portland OR 97205, a limited number of tickets remain available:
