Classes Canceled For A Third Day - August 30 - In Evergreen Public Schools - 08/29/18
Evergreen Public Schools and the Evergreen Education Association (EEA) continue to work on proposals, but still do not have a settlement in time to reopen schools tomorrow (Thursday), August 30. Evergreen’s 1,800 teachers are now on strike after taking a vote last week not to return to the classrooms unless they have an amended agreement to their current contract.
“Our goal is to return students and teachers to classrooms as quickly as possible in a fiscally sustainable way,” said District officials.
As the strike continues, the District announced some updates:
- With school buildings closed, families needing to register students new to the District can do so at the Administrative Service Center’s Tan Complex (13501 NE 28th Street) from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.;
- The Boundaries Office (located in the Administrative Service Center’s Burgundy Complex) will reopen tomorrow, August 30 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.;
- With sports events starting at McKenzie Stadium later this week, Family Athletic Passes (normally sold at high schools) will be available beginning today at the Community Education office (located in the Administrative Service Center’s Tan Complex) from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 12 Noon to 4:00 p.m. The cost is $85; and
- Project Transformation will be at Orchards United Methodist Church starting tomorrow providing breakfast and lunch to students and families. The site is unsupervised but volunteers will be on site. 9:30 am until 2pm. The address is 11000 NE Fourth Plain Blvd. 98662
As previously announced, during the strike:
- Families should expect a daily update with the status of school for the next day;
- Middle and high school athletics are also continuing, as much as possible, with scheduled practices and games/matches/meets as the coaches are covered under a separate contract;
- All school buildings will be closed to the public as well as any staff not in paid status or scheduled to work. The District’s Administrative Service Center will continue to be open and operate on a normal schedule; and
- Area childcare providers are helping parents accommodate continuing needs of daycare, while a local group, Project Transformation is offering breakfast and lunch, plus activities for parents and children at Leroy Haagen Park from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (Activities are unsupervised, so parents need to accompany children).
Current information will be posted on the District’s website at www.evergreenps.org, and at 360/604-3637.
