Eugene, OR. Eugene Springfield Fire responded to a two-alarm apartment fire near downtown Eugene on Friday afternoon. Around 2:30 PM on April 3rd, area residents reported smoke and fire from a first floor apartment in a two story apartment building located in the 1300 block of Lawrence St. There were multiple callers reporting the fire and the first arriving crews identified heavy fire and smoke on arrival with the fire already extending to a second floor apartment.
With access issues and heavy fire, a second alarm was called to ensure sufficient resources to search for potential victims and engage fire on multiple floors. Truck 1 arrived first and entered the fire occupancy to search and slow the spread of fire with their “cans”. Cans are 2.5 gallon water extinguishers that are often used by crews staffing apparatus that do not have pumps and hoses. The can is capable of knocking fire down and protecting the crew when searching ahead of a hose line.
Thanks to an aggressive fire attack, crews brought the fire under control containing the fire to the original unit and one unit above. Additional adjacent units did experience moderate smoke damage. There were no injuries to report and the cause is under investigation.
