ESD 123 Early Learning Director Announced As New Dixie Superintendent (Photo) - 05/09/18
PASCO, WA – The small, rural school district of Dixie, Washington is partnering with its educational service district in a new, collaborative way. Beginning July 1, ESD 123 Early Learning Director Matt Bona will fill the position of Superintendent at Dixie School District. Mr. Bona will continue in his director role at the ESD in addition to his new role at Dixie, following the resignation of current Dixie Superintendent Kevin Graffis.
With only one school and less than twenty students, Dixie School District is among the three smallest (between 10-20 students) in the ESD’s region of 23 districts. As a small, remote district, it can be challenging to fill positions that inevitably require the individual to wear many hats. ESD 123 frequently contracts with its smaller districts to provide services that are more difficult for these districts to recruit for and fund alone. While filling a vacant superintendent position through the ESD is not common, it is a creative solution that both Dixie and the ESD expect to be successful and are eager to begin. The partnership involves Bona to serve as superintendent of Dixie for one day each week (52 days), and four days a week in his current position at the ESD. The contract is a one-year agreement for the 2018-2019 school year.
“I’m looking forward to working with the school board and community to improve the district and make the school the best place for students to learn,” says Bona.
Bona has 22 years of experience in education, including two years as Early Learning Director at ESD 123, six years serving as Principal at Sharpstein Elementary in Walla Walla, and four years as Assistant Principal at Walla Walla High School. This will be his first superintendent position.
ESD 123 is proud to partner with Dixie on this new collaboration and looks forward to Mr. Bona’s work with the district. For more information, contact ESD Director of Communications Molly Curtiss at 509.544.5787 or mcurtiss@esd123.org.
