Prevent Coalition to hold youth advocacy training, present Rep. Harris with award - 12/02/19

VANCOUVER, Wash., Dec. 2, 2019 –ESD 112’s Prevent Coalition will host a training event for Southwest Washington youth to learn about spearheading prevention efforts in their communities and to present an award to Washington State Representative Paul Harris. The advocacy training event will be held at Excelsior High School in Washougal on Thursday, December 5.

Training sessions will focus on learning how to connect and build relationships with elected officials and their staff, and about the legislative process in general. Youth will also learn techniques for communicating about legislative issues all with the goal of preventing substance abuse in their local communities.

Rep. Harris, who was key in getting Tobacco 21 legislation passed in the Washington State Legislature earlier this year, will provide a keynote address at the youth training event. Harris and Prevent Coalition workers, along with other prevention coalitions across Southwest Washington, have worked together for several years, advocating for legislation that limits young people’s access to tobacco and vaping products. Youth from Prevent Coalition will present Harris with an award during his speech for his efforts supporting Tobacco 21 legislation in Washington.
