Yakima, WA – Educational Service District 105 is pleased to share that the Board of Directors has announced Shane Backlund as its new superintendent, effective July 1, 2024. Mr. Backlund, who currently serves as the deputy superintendent, will succeed Kevin Chase, who is retiring after a distinguished career in education spanning more than four decades. 

Mr. Backlund is an accomplished educator and educational leader, earning recognition by the Washington State Association of Superintendents (WASA) in both 2022 and 2018 for his service to students and schools in south central Washington. Prior to joining the ESD 105 in 2022, Mr. Backlund served as the Selah School District superintendent for more than ten years. 

Since becoming the Deputy Superintendent of ESD 105 in 2022, Mr. Backlund has played an essential role in ESD 105's leadership team, demonstrating a deep commitment to advancing equity, educational opportunities and community partnerships. His extensive experience within the region and his forward-thinking approach have been evident throughout his tenure, particularly in his pivotal role in spearheading our agency's strategic process planning initiatives.

The Board's decision reflects their confidence in Mr. Backlund’s ability to continue to forge connections that support our regions’ students and education communities.
