Museum to Celebrate Rosie the Riveter Day (Photo) - 03/16/18

For Immediate Release:

McMinnville, Oregon, March 16, 2018 - At 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, March 21st, Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum will celebrate National Women's History Month by honoring the legacy of the women who made history on the Home Front during World War II, collectively symbolized by "Rosie the Riveter."

From 1941 to 1945, millions of women on the home front, 'Rosie the Riveters,' answered the call of their country: to build planes, ships, jeeps, tanks and tackle any job needed to support our troops. Their commitment was integral to the success of our troops and our allies. In 2018, Oregon will plant 50 rose bushes throughout the state representing 'living memorial' gardens to honor the efforts of these women on their Congressionally-Endorsed, National "Rosie the Riveter Day", March 21--a part of National Women's History month. This campaign honors all women including 'Rosie the Riveters,' war brides and many other women on the WWII home--front, complementary to the 152,000 Oregonians who served and the 4,000 who made the ultimate sacrifice in WWII. This initiative is part of the Spirit of '45/Weeks Roses Campaign with all five of Oregon's Congressional Districts represented. The 50 rose bushes were created specially by Weeks Roses and donated for the event, and will be presented and planted across Oregon.

Museum Curator, Terry Juran, is the son of a Rosie who worked at Boeing and put wings on B-17 bombers, which makes him a "Rivet." Julia Cannell, Development Director, is the granddaughter of a Rosie. Julia's mother is a "Rosebud" and Julia is a "Rosebud II" which designates second generation.

The free ceremony will take place outdoors at 10:00 AM near the entrance to the Aviation Museum, next to a C-47 aircraft--which took part in the Allied invasion on D-Day.
