A New Playground at Chief Miwaleta County Park
(Douglas County, Ore.) The Douglas County Board of Commissioners are excited to announce that the Douglas County Parks Department has completed the renovation of the playground at Chief Miwaleta County Park and Campground near Azalea in southern Douglas County. The new creatively themed ‘pirate’ playground is open and ready for patrons to enjoy, just in time for upcoming spring break activities and the outdoor recreation season. The project was made possible through a grant program with the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and Douglas County Parks Department.
The new playground at Chief Miwaleta County Park features a fun pirate ship play structure, a swing set, several climbing apparatuses and even an alligator. The pirate theme was selected for this park in order to honor the Glendale High School mascot, as well as the water focused recreation that draws patrons to Chief Miwaleta County Park and Galesville Reservoir.
“The goal of the project was to ensure that the new playground provided an environment that was accessible for everyone that wanted to enjoy it,” said Douglas County Parks Director, Rocky Houston.
Modern accessible and inclusive playgrounds provide the opportunity for kids of all ages, fitness levels, physical abilities and economic levels, with a space to exercise or just have some good old-fashioned fun, without the typical limitations that one might see with playgrounds developed in years past. With the accessibility goal in mind, the Douglas County Parks Department installed a new paved pathway from the parking lot to the structure; placed rubber surfacing around the play structure, and created an accessible transition platform so all users can get into the pirate ship.
“The playground is a huge improvement over our old playground,” commented Commissioner Chris Boice “It has been a great partnership between the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s Local Grant Program and the County to facilitate this project. We are excited to provide an all –inclusive play area that promotes the healthy development of social skills, stimulates physical development and encourages play for all children in southern Douglas County”.
Chief Miwaleta County Park and Campground is located on the banks of Galesville Reservoir, about eight miles east of Interstate-5, on Upper Cow Creek Road, near Azalea, Oregon. The park is considered a destination for water-based recreation, and includes a campground with cabins, boat ramps, a day use area, a pavilion, several waterfront picnic sites, hiking trails in surrounding public lands and access to the 640-acre reservoir for fishing and boating recreation. The day-use park and playground are open daily from dawn to dusk.
