The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Responds To Early?Morning Crash And Car Fire After Driver Hits Barrier On Highway 97 Near 61st Street (Photo)

Bend, OR – At 4:21 a.m. on Monday, September 21, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single‑vehicle crash on Highway 97 just south of 61st Street. Deputies say that a 1992 Subaru SVX driven by 18‑year‑old Seoan Padraic Mooney of Powell Butte hit the highway barrier and caught fire, closing all lanes of traffic for nearly an hour.
Witnesses reported seeing Mooney speeding in the southbound lanes before the crash. He was the only person in the vehicle and was able to get out on his own before the fire spread. Bend Fire & Rescue responded and extinguished the flames.
Mooney was arrested on a citation and taken to St. Charles–Bend for treatment of non‑life‑threatening injuries. He faces charges of DUII, Reckless Driving, Reckless Endangering, and Criminal Mischief 1.
