Update To Shooting Investigation Off Alfalfa Market Road (Photo) - 02/14/23

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Detectives Division received notification Jesse Aaron Ray plead no contest to the charge of Criminally Negligent Homicide on Monday February 13th, 2023.

Arrested: Ray, Jesse Aaron 39 years old Bend

Charges: Manslaughter in the First Degree, Criminally Negligent Homicide, Negligently Wounding Another

Over the last several months the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Detectives Unit has been diligently working to locate and apprehend Jesse Aaron Ray. Detectives with the assistance of the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office presented the case to the Grand Jury and received an indictment. As a result, a nationwide felony arrest warrant was issued on the above-mentioned charges.

During the third week of November Jesse Aaron Ray was contacted in the State of Tabasco, Mexico, and transported by U.S. Marshalls to the Los Angeles County Jail. Jesse Aaron Ray was arrested on the outstanding nationwide felony warrant, and on December 21st, 2022, was extradited to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Adult Jail without incident.

Any further information on this case will be released by the District Attorney’s Office.

Arrested: Ray, Jesse Aaron  39 years old Bend

Charges: Negligent wounding of another and Unlawful use of a weapon

 

Over the last couple weeks, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office detective unit developed a person of interest in the Mayfield Pond shooting.  That person was identified as Jesse Aaron Ray. Detectives located evidence linking Ray to the shooting incident at Mayfield Pond. Detectives also learned Ray was living out of his car in the area of Stevens Road and 27th Street in Bend. 

On 07/20/2022 at approximately 5:30 AM, detectives and members of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team served a search warrant on Ray and his vehicle on Stevens Road.  Ray was taken into custody without incident.  Ray was eventually cited and released on the above listed charges. DCSO detectives have been working closely with the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office on this case and they will be reviewing this case for possible additional charges. 

Any further information on this case will be released by the District Attorney’s Office.

Detectives have been working since yesterday to investigate the shooting death of the adult male off Alfalfa Market Road.  This case is currently being investigated as a possible accidental shooting and they are asking for anyone that was in the area of Mayfield Pond target shooting on the afternoon of June 30, 2022 to come forward.  Detectives are specifically asking for information on a person and vehicle observed near the scene of the shooting.  The vehicle has been described as a smaller, white SUV or crossover; likely less than ten years old.  The driver has been described as a white male in his 30’s. 

DCSO detectives are also seeking home video surveillance from any community member that may have captured roadway vehicle traffic after 1:00 pm yesterday at the following locations: vehicle traffic on Neff Road between the City of Bend and Powell Butte Highway and vehicle traffic on Alfalfa Market Road between Powell Butte Highway and the Alfalfa Store.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call non-emergency dispatch at 541-693-6911 and ask to speak with a detective. 

The name of the deceased will be released once his next of kin has been notified.

NARRATIVE:

Just after 2:00 pm today, deputies with the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported shooting on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land near milepost 4 on Alfalfa Market Road.  When deputies and Bend Fire Department medics arrived on scene, they determined one adult male was deceased.  DCSO detectives have been called out to the scene and are leading the investigation into the shooting death.  They are being assisted by the Bend Police Department, the Oregon State Police, the Oregon State Police Crime Lab and the Deschutes County District Attorney's Office. 

This is an active investigation, and the public should expect a heavy law enforcement presence in the area for an extended period.  We do not currently have information that there is an active threat to public safety.  Community members should always be aware of their surroundings though and report anything suspicious to their local law enforcement.

Detectives are also asking to speak anyone that was in the area of the BLM land near milepost 4 on Alfalfa Market Road around 2:00 pm today.  Anyone with information should call non-emergency dispatch at 541-693-6911 and ask to speak with a detective.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
