News Release
Subject Captured After Pursuit and K9 Track - 04/07/21

Released by: Sergeant Jayson Janes

Date: April 7, 2021

Arrested: William Earl Swanson, 42 year old male, Bend

Charges: Attempt to Elude Felony, Attempt to Elude Misdemeanor, Reckless Driving, and Felon in Possession of a Restricted Weapon.

Vehicle: 1995 Honda Accord

On April 6, 2021 Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office deputies were in the area of China Hat Rd. A deputy observed a Honda Accord driving south on China Hat Rd. near MP 1 displaying expired registration stickers. The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle and the vehicle immediately sped up in an attempt to get away. The deputy pursued the vehicle a short distance until it turned onto a dirt power line road.

The vehicle was quickly found near the power line road to the north of China Hat Rd. The vehicle had been abandoned and was still running.  Deputies believed the vehicle belonged to William Swanson based on prior contacts. Deputies had information that Swanson had been involved in two earlier disputes. During one dispute he reportedly displayed a weapon.

Deputies quickly set up a perimeter in the area. K9 Ezel and his partner, Deputy Johnson responded to the vehicle. Deputy Johnson made numerous announcements that he was tracking with a K9 advising the person he may be bit if he did not give up. K9 Ezel and Deputy Johnson started tracking the subject. K9 Ezel located the subject approximately ¼ from his vehicle. The subject identified as Swanson was hiding in a bush and was ultimately bit by K9 Ezel.

Swanson was taken into custody and evaluated by paramedics for minor injuries. Swanson was transported to St. Charles in Bend for an evaluation for reasons unrelated to the dog bite. After being evaluated at St. Charles, Swanson was transported to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Jail and lodged on the above mentioned charges.

During a search of Swanson’s vehicle, deputies located a BB gun pistol which resembled an actual handgun equipped with a laser sight.

More charges from the earlier disputes are possible.
