Released by: Sergeant Jayson Janes

Date: February 22, 2021

Arrested: Shawn Ray Ison, 23 year old male, Terrebonne, OR

Vehicle: 2012 white Ford Focus

Charges: Elude Misdemeanor, Resisting Arrest, and Warrant for Abscond. These are charges for today’s incident. He was also arrested for Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Elude Felony (2 counts), Reckless Driving, and Reckless Endangering.  These charges are for a past case.

On February 22, 2021 at approximately 5:38 AM a citizen reported a suspicious vehicle in the area of 494 NW Lava Rd. in the City of Bend. The caller thought the driver of the vehicle might have been intoxicated. A Bend Police Officer responded and the vehicle immediately left at a high rate of speed. The Bend Police Officer did not pursue, but was able to give out a vehicle description along with a license plate. This information was passed along to local law enforcement agencies.

Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office deputies believed they knew who the driver was, and possibly where he would be going. DCSO deputies, Bend Police Officers, and Oregon State Police Officers responded to Deschutes River Woods, in the event he was going there. A DCSO deputy was set up in the area of Riverwoods Dr. just west of Faugarwee Circle with Spike Strips. The deputy observed the vehicle approaching, and was able to successfully deploy the spike strips. The subject continued driving through Deschutes River Woods with three flat tires.

Law enforcement was able to set up a perimeter in the area and observed the vehicle driving on Buck Canyon Rd. Deputies found the vehicle parked and abandoned on Buck Canyon Rd. At this time law enforcement adjusted the perimeter. They also requested Elk Meadow Elementary School and Pine Ridge Elementary School be locked down. Citizens started calling dispatch with sightings of the subject running through the area.

Based on citizen tips, law enforcement was able to locate the subject in the area of Hiawatha Rd. near Apache Rd. The subject determined to be Shawn Ray Ison was contacted by a DCSO deputy. The deputy attempted to take Ison into custody, but Ison  actively resistited. While the deputy was trying to get Ison into custody, Bend Police K-9 Lil’ Kim and her handler Officer Uballez arrived on scene. Due to Ison actively fighting with the deputy, Lil Kim bit Ison. Ison was then taken into custody afterward.

After Ison was cleared by paramedics, he was transported to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office jail and lodged on the above mentioned charges. More charges are possible.

Ison was successfully taken into custody due to all involved law enforcement agencies working well together, and the tips from the citizens in the area.
