NARRATIVE:
On 8/11/19 at about 3:05 PM, Deschutes County dispatch received a 911 call regarding an injured hiker near No Name Lake (Broken Top). The injured hiker, later identified as Mary Ortmann, had reportedly fallen while descending the trail and had sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
One Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Deputy was able to make phone contact with a member of Ortmann’s party to monitor Ortmann’s status and help coordinate the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue response. 18 DCSO SAR Volunteers responded to the scene while Ortmann and her party began a careful descent to help expedite the process of getting Ortmann to medics.
The DCSO SAR volunteers met Ortmann part way up the Broken Top trail that leads to No Name Lake at about 5:15 pm and treated her on scene. Ortmann was then transported via wheeled litter down to the Broken Top trailhead by the DCSO SAR volunteers where she was then transferred into a DCSO SAR vehicle and transported down to the Todd Lake trailhead where a Bend Fire and Rescue ambulance was waiting.
Ortmann was transported by Bend Fire to St. Charles Bend via ground ambulance to receive further treatment of her injuries.
DCSO SAR volunteers returned to headquarters at approximately 8:00 pm.
