NARRATIVE:
Bend, OR – On June 5, 2019, members of the Mt. View High School’s trap club participated in a friendly shooting competition with the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, strengthening relationships between Central Oregon youth and law enforcement.
The informal competition between students and deputies followed the standard event protocol for actual trap shooting competitions, where each participant shoots at 100 airborne clay targets launched between 48 and 52 yards from the shooter.
The Mt. View trap club team is already proving themselves to be formidable opponents throughout state competitions, with several members ranked among the top 50 shooters in the state. The trap club was formed in 2018 by Jennifer Phillips, a mother whose son participates in trap shooting. The club has quickly grown to include 17 members, managed by Mrs. Phillips. The dedicated student athletes practice several times a week at the Bend Trap Club, where the exciting and challenging student/deputy competition was held on June 5 at 4:00pm.
“Mt. View High School has a good team and we are proud to support them,” said Deschutes County Sheriff L. Shane Nelson. “The deputies were excited to compete with these talented student athletes. It was a fun afternoon and provided a great opportunity to build meaningful relationships between the students and the deputies.”
“Our kids were thrilled to compete against the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office,” said Phillips. “It was fun for everyone and a tremendous boost for us as we get ready for the upcoming state tournament at the end of June.”
