Redmond, OR – A horse died in Redmond, Oregon on Monday night after it was struck by a passenger car on Helmholtz Way after escaping its pasture. The driver complained of minor injuries.
On December 3rd, 2018, at 11:49PM, Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to a single vehicle motor vehicle crash with a horse.
DCSO Deputies arrived to find a 2002 Subaru Forester, driven by Haley Jo Shaw, age 23 of Redmond, Oregon, with significant damage and passenger compartment intrusion. Shaw complained of minor injuries and was examined at the scene by Redmond Fire Department Paramedics. Shaw was the only vehicle occupant.
The horse was severely injured and was alive when DCSO Deputies and Redmond Fire Department Firefighters arrived. An emergency equine veterinarian was dispatched while DCSO Deputies attempted to calm the horse and locate the horse’s owner.
Sadly, the horse was euthanized at the scene of the crash.
The investigation determined that the dark colored horse escaped a nearby pasture and began walking southbound on SW Helmholtz Way at SW Elkhorn Ave. Shaw was driving northbound on SW Helmholtz Way when she struck the horse broadside. The horse rolled onto the hood of Shaw’s Subaru and partially penetrated her windshield before coming to rest in the roadway.
SW Helmholtz Way, at the crash scene, was closed for about 1 hour. This area is deemed a Closed Range Livestock District.
This crash remains under investigation and no citations have been issued.
