Injury Vehicle Versus Pedestrian Crash in La Pine - Driver Arrested (Photo) - 07/12/18

Location:              Highway 97 at Huntington Road in La Pine

Pedestrian:          Harold Headrick      Age: 77          La Pine, Oregon

Driver:                  Sheri L. Barnes       Age: 53          La Pine, Oregon

Vehicle:                Red 2012 Kia Rio

Charges:              Assault 2, Felony Unlawful Poss. of Methamphetamine, DUII, Reckless Driving,  Reckless Endangering

NARRATIVE:         

On July 12, 2018, at approximately 10:15am, deputies with the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) were dispatched to an erratic driver southbound on Highway 97 within the city limits of La Pine.  Moments later, the red 2012 Kia Rio struck a pedestrian attempting to cross Highway 97 from west to east at the intersection of Highway 97 and Huntington Road.  The first deputy arrived within a minute of being dispatched.

The driver of the Kia Rio, Sheri L. Barnes of La Pine, stopped and remained at the crash scene.  Deputies determined during the investigation Sheri L. Barnes was under the influence of a suspected controlled substance at the time of the crash and she was subsequently placed under arrest.

The pedestrian, Harold Headrick of La Pine, was transported by ground ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend with serious, life threatening injuries.

Traffic on Highway 97 was routed around the crash scene while deputies completed their investigation.  DCSO was assisted by the Oregon State Police, Oregon Department of Transportation, and La Pine Fire Department.
