**FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE**

David’s Chair in partnership with the Western Amputee Golf Association is bringing Championship Adaptive Golf to Southern Oregon in May of 2023.

MEDFORD, Ore. (March 8, 2023) - Medford-based nonprofit David’s Chair is partnering with the Western Amputee Golf Association (WAGA) to host the inaugural West Coast Adaptive Golf Championship (WCAGC) in Medford at the Rogue Valley Country Club (RVCC) May 15 – 18, 2023. “We have been working with the RVCC General Manager Thor Damerval and the Board of Directors to bring this event to the Valley for several months,” David’s Chair CEO and Co-founder Steve Furst said. “RVCC has a long history of hosting championship golf tournaments and I cannot think of a better venue in our region.”

WAGA is one of five regions of the National Amputee Golf Association (NAGA), which is the longest standing disabled golf association in the United States. NAGA was started by a group of disabled World War II Veterans and in 1954 they were incorporated as the National Amputee Golf Association. “It was a no brainer to work with such a fine organization with a rich tradition in disabled golf,” said David’s Chair CEO and Co-founder Steve Furst. “We will lean heavily on the knowledge of this historic organization to produce a premier adaptive golf event.”

WAGA President Jim Curley will be working in conjunction with the United States Adaptive Golf Alliance. According to Jim, “USAGA has been serving the special needs community through their inclusion in the game of golf since 2014 by improving access and by providing instruction and competition at all skill levels”, Jim added, “the WCAGC will be a 54-hole US and World Ranking championship adaptive golf event”. Jim, who lives in Klamath Falls, OR, has over 20 years’ experience in tournament planning and golf course preparation for golfers with and without physical challenges. “We are looking forward to bringing competitive adaptive golf to the Rogue Valley Country Club, a championship golf venue,” Jim stated.

About David’s Chair

Our primary mission at David’s Chair is to provide opportunities for people with mobility challenges to participate in outdoor recreation. When we added our ParaGolfer program in June of 2022 we sought out opportunities in the world of golf to support our mission. Although we focus primarily on people with mobility challenges this tournament is open to people with physical and sensory disabilities that qualify set forth by the national standards.

David’s Chair got its start in 2017, after Medford resident David Hartrick was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). An avid hunter and fisherman, David immediately began searching for a way to enjoy the outdoors in the confines of a wheelchair. With the help of co-founder Steve Furst, the pair discovered Action Trackchairs and raised enough money to buy one. David recognized he wouldn’t be able to use it for long and dreamed of others benefiting from the chair as well; shortly after, the non-profit David’s Chair was born.

David passed away on January 11, 2018, just 11 months after his ALS diagnosis. However, David’s Chair continues to give the gift of independence and freedom to people with ALS and other mobility challenges. Both David’s original Action Trackchair, along with four newer chairs have been used by people with mobility challenges to go places and experience freedom they haven’t been able to, free of charge.
