Chaplains Complete Week-Long Training Program at Oregon Public Safety Academy - 06/08/19

The Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) was pleased to host the annual Oregon Chaplains Academy this week at the Oregon Public Safety Academy in Salem.

This week-long training opportunity is supported by the Department of Public Safety & Standards, Federation of Fire Chaplains, International Conference of Police Chaplains, Oregon Chiefs of Police Association, Oregon Fire Chiefs Association, and Oregon State Sheriff’s Association. 

Instructors are Chaplains from various Oregon public safety agencies.  Chaplains from public safety agencies around the state completed the class.

DPSST's Director Eriks Gabliks said "DPSST is honored to host this academy-based training course for public safety chaplains in Oregon.  Public safety chaplains work with law enforcement, fire-rescue, 9-1-1, and corrections agencies around the state, 24 hours a day, and play an essential role in providing support to public safety personnel and residents in the communities they serve."

Topics covered during the week-long class include: First Responder Injury & Death, Death Notifications, Officer Involved Shootings, Stress First Aid, Suicide Prevention & Intervention, Confidentiality & Legal Liability, Orientation to Fire Equipment, Orientation to Law Enforcement Equipment, Substance Abuse, First Responder Chaplaincy, Beginning a Chaplaincy, First Responder Families, Responding to a Crisis, Chaplain & First Responder Safety, Physiology of Trauma, Critical Incident Stress Management, Ethics, Sensitivity & Diversity, Incident Command System Overview, Forensics & Crime Scene Basics, Ride Along Procedures, Ceremonies, and many more.
