News Release
Cowlitz County - Train and vehicle collision - driver not injured - cited for failure to stop. - 07/12/18

Castle Rock, Wa - Deputies responded to the report of a train verses vehicle collision at the Horseshoe Bend Estates crossing. The crash happened at around 1820 hours. William Barnell, age 82, was northbound on Pleasant Hill RD. He made a left turn onto Horseshoe Bend Estates and did not stop at the posted stop sign before crossing the double set of tracks. (This is about 4 miles south of Castle Rock Washington).  Barnell’s 2007 Chrysler Town & Country minivan was struck by the northbound Union Pacific Freight train. There was heavy damage to the driver’s side rear quarter panel. Barnell was uninjured and refused medical aid at the scene. His van was a total loss.

Two crew members were on the train and uninjured. The engineer told me they were traveling 49 mph in the 50 mph zone. When they saw Barnell’s van, they sounded the horn and activated the emergency brakes. The train was not disabled. There was no obvious damage to the tracks.

Barnell was issued an infraction for Fail to Stop at Stop Sign. A BNSF Officers responded to the scene.

All questions about the train should be referred to BNSF.
